Just arrived in town and have no idea what's going on? You poor dear. It's a good thing I'm here to help you out! The name is Prince. And don't you dare start making comments about irony! No, I'm not a prince turned into a frog. That was my cousin over in New Orleans, if you must know. Instead, I'm just a regular frog. Yep. Don't ask me how that happened. Genetics were never my thing and the private lives of my family are just that - private. But it's not a bad life really. I'm making quite a good living over here at Albany Beauty by directing the lost and the befuzzled. That's you, sweetheart. I was offered the chance to be a tour guide here and I leaped at the chance (no pun intended). Don't ask me why I got the gig though - this layout just doesn't go with my skin tone. So enough about me and on with the show as they say. This is, if you've been a real plonker and totally missed the big sign above me, Albany Beauty. Yes, it sounds like a silly name. No, it's not to do with the city. Any of them. It's actually our admin's attempt at being clever as Albany Beauty is the name of a kind of apple that is particularly deep red in colour. Yep, like the one that chick ate because some old hag told her to - smart one, that girl. The apple, like others of its kin also has cyanide within its pips, so, if you like, you could say that the forum has been named after a poison apple. And that's the whole point really. AB is an original fairy tale roleplay. Set in the 15th Century - the corsets, the horse-riding and the lice - the town of Fae is our setting. Here, the royal family of our kingdom sit in their royal palace and the not so fortunate go about their everyday lives. Some that are rich enough may attend court in the town hall or, if scholarly is their nature, attend the university. Further down the social hierarchy there are places to go and things to see for people of even the lowest walk of life, even if they aren't so privileged as to be on royal soil. Is this sounding your cup of tea so far? Yes, no? Well let me go on to explain a little more about what I mean when I say fairy tales, shall I? For those of you who think there are only a few in the world that Disney and the Grimm brothers like to tell, you're sorely mistaken. Check it out online and you'll find tonnes and tonnes of the stuff. Not only are there hundreds of fairy tales and folklores from, most likely, your own country, but tales from foreign ones too. Different versions between languages and different ideals shown in characters who have always been thought to be the same person. Try Sleeping Beauty for example. Did you know, her name was never Aurora in the original? Instead, she was given her princess name by Walt Disney who kept her real name as the pseudonym she's given later - Brier Rose. She's also called Rose Bud in a few variations. And that's not even scraping the surface of modern day interpretation. What about Cinderella? Sam Montgomery from A Cinderella Story is a far cry away from Danielle De Barbarac in Ever After. On top of which, you have your own interpretations. Though the standards of writing here at AB demand a certain amount of sticking with facts, creativity is encouraged, of course! Which means we're totally open to having five Cinderella characters, all with slightly different stories, names and personalities. Can you imagine? It'd be like my eye sight after New Years. I can barely keep up normally! But thank the lords, that's not my job. The admins are the ones responsible for keeping all these Cinderellas and Snow Whites in order - good God think of the dwarves! - while I'm just your faithful guide through the waters of AB until you start picking up your froggy-paddle technique. Speaking of which, if we're all done here and you have enough of an idea of what you're looking at, then we'd best start getting a wriggle on. Plenty to see here and so little time to get it done! So, welcome to Albany Beauty, and lets get going! Next stop is the plot and setting - this will explain, in a bit better detail what I've been trying to say since you got here, so hopefully it will help. |
